Lwanga Dares Museveni Again: You Won’t Silence Us

The Archbishop of Kampala, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga

The verbal fight between President Yoweri Museveni and top religious leaders is not about to end.

This is after Museveni angrily referred to religious leaders as traitors in his New Year message at his Country Home in Rwakitura.

“Some of our religious people are so full of arrogance. They talk most authoritatively on all and everything even when they have not bothered to find out the truth. This is assuming they do not have evil intentions which would be worse.  That would make them into the Kayaffas, the Chief Priest, that betrayed Jesus,” Museveni said.

However, religious leaders from across the divide hit back at Museveni, arguing that they can’t sit back and watch when things are going wrong.

The Archbishop of Kampala, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga  on New Year’s day hit back at the president, saying the clergy are simply playing their cardinal role as citizens to participate in nation building, and as well as resisting bad politics as President Museveni himself once asked Ugandans to.

During the memorial service for the burial of former Archbishop of Church of Uganda, Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo at Namugongo Anglican Shrine on Tuesday, Lwanga launched a fresh attack at Museveni, saying that they won’t be silenced.

“The remarks we make are none other than those telling the truth because the church is the conscience of the state,” Lwanga said.

He said the current attacks on the Church by politicians are a repeat of what happened in the 80’s.

“People are fighting against the truth with fury. Some individuals are turning current affairs into a personal project. This isn’t right for national unity, peace building,” Lwanga added, appealing to Government to listen to voices of reason for purposes of promoting peace, justice and stability.
