The Uganda Girl Guides Association (UGGA) has launched a fundraising drive aimed at raising awareness and funds toward hosting the historic World Conference of Girl Guides.
The body which has been in existence in the country since 1914 is affiliated to the global World Association of Girl Guides and Scouts (WAGGS).
Speaking to members of the media during a press briefing at Golf Course Hotel, Ms Molly Grace Akello the Chief Commissioner of the UGGA said, “The Uganda Girl Guides Association will host a fundraiser gala dinner on Friday 25th October aimed at raising funds for hosting The 37th World Conference meeting which will attract delegates from more than 150 countries of World Association of Girl Guides to Uganda.”
Ms Akello said every three years the WAGGGS come together to deliberate on difference issues to drive the Association for the next three years. The Association is targeting to raise UGX 1 billion to finance the World Conference.
“Uganda bid to host the World Conference in New Dehli in India in 2017 beating a super power USA. This conference will attract over 800 delegates from 150 countries who will converge in Uganda. This not only presents an opportunity to deliberate on issues affecting the body but also benefit the economy of the country through tourism, accommodation, an opportunity for the local population to benefit,” she said.
The World Conference will be held in Uganda on the 11th – 17th July 2020 at Speke Resort Munyonyo. “As a country this is a proud moment for us as we shall be attracting the world to Uganda. It will be an opportunity for us to sell Uganda to the world,” she said.
The delegates will also go out and explore the various tourist attractions and cultures of our country which will earn us foreign exchange.
She said they will also use the World Conference to launch the Associations centenary celebrations which will be held in 2022.
Mrs. Florence Kyoshabire, the Chairperson Uganda Girl Guides Association said the Association is a movement where we girls and young women are valued to take action in the world. “We are helping these girls to develop their leadership skills and know that they are valued. Above all we are telling them that they can equally contribute to the development of society,” she said.
Adding; “As an association all this is geared towards our vision which is “All girls and young women are valued to take action and change the world,”
