General Mugisha Muntu, the Head of the New Formation has condemned the reported rowdy group of people, identifying themselves as members of the opposition that heckled and attacked Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye over the weekend.
Besigye, a founder of Forum for Democratic Change and a strong pillar of Uganda’s opposition politics was reportedly attacked outside CBS radio offices after a political talk show on Saturday.
In a statement, Muntu said “while the identity and motives of these people are still a matter of debate, it must be made clear by all leaders of opposition groups that the future we seek can never be achieved by using the same methods we are fighting against.”
He added: “I have always said that we cannot give what we do not have. While it is understandable that different opposition groups have different views about how we should proceed, we must be careful that we do not resort to the same underhand, violent, undemocratic methods that the government regularly employs against those who disagree with them.
I
therefore condemn the actions of the aforementioned group and thank Hon. Robert
Kyagulanyi for swiftly and decisively disassociating himself from them. Our
opinions on how to achieve the Uganda we want may differ, but we can disagree
without being disagreeable.”
