The Ministry of Education and Sports has asked institutions of learning to delay the reopening of schools and breaking off of learners until further notice.
Under the calendar by the Ministry of Education and Sports on the staggered reopening of classes, P1, P2 and P.3 learners were supposed to report on June 7 while P4 and P5 learners break off on June 4, while P.6, S.3 and S.5 are meant to report back next week for the special term.
However in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Alex Kakooza, all the planned reporting back and breaking off should be suspended until the President’s address on June 6, which will give guidance on the way forward for the sector.
Ismail Mulindwa, the Director of Basic and Secondary Education, says that the ministry found it important to come out with guidance after realizing that both the institutions of learning and the general public were confused on the way forward given the surge in the number of covid -19 cases in the country.
On Thursday, the President’s advisor on epidemics Dr Monica Musenero said that to avoid the situation of parents rushing to pick children from school and spending money on paying fees, parents would be safe to wait for the presidential advice.
She also said that the COVID-19 situation in the country is worrying and also the increasing cases in schools need to be analysed. According to Musenero, some schools have decided to hide cases that make the situation worse for the country and the learners’ population.
