Kenya’s Finance Minister Ukur Yatani has announced a three-year freeze in hiring civil servants as a way of reducing the country’s wage bill, The Star newspaper reports.
Mr Yatani, who took office in June after his predecessor was charged with corruption, said there will also be funding cuts for other expenditure including on ICT equipment.
The money saved from the austerity measures will be used to fund the government’s Big Four agenda: affordable housing, food security, universal healthcare and enhanced manufacturing
Other ministries will now be required to get approval from the finance ministry before implementing any pay review.
The directive further stops ministries from seeking funds for interns or any planned staff promotions, meaning government workers may not get a pay rise soon, The Star reports.
