He advises that before a motorist puts oil into their car, it is important to find out what the car manufacturer recommended on the labels of the car so that it matches the specifications indicated on the labels of the lubricant.
He insisted that not all engine oils on the market can give the same results even when applied correctly, because of the technology involved. Kaganzi says, for example, some oils are purely synthetic, or made from refining crude to a certain fluidity, while others are semi-synthetic, made from various petrochemicals and other additional substances.
He, however, says, that the vehicle manufacturers design the vehicles with the type of oil to be used in mind, and they will always indicate these on the cars to help the motorist choose what type of oil is fit doe their car.
However, with the level of technical specialization in the petroleum industry, many motorists either ignore or find it hard to follow these requirements before changing their engine oils.
Nicolaas Johannes Grobbelaar, General Manager of Vivo Energy Uganda (distributor of Shell products) says they will use the newly launched “Bikula Bonnet and Win” campaign to explain why it is important to know what your car engine needs.
He says it is their duty to keep sensitizing and updating the public about the new developments in the industry, for their safety and the safety of the vehicles. while the lubricants industry also keeps innovating to match the requirements of the newer car models.
The age of the vehicle also determines what type of engine oil is suitable for it because of how much technology has changed Engineer Kaganzi says, for example, that some of the cars on the market have engines that require oils that provide much more port, cleaning the engines of dust and reducing the emissions, while the older cars (manufactured in 1999 or before) could withstand dust better.
The choice can also be influenced by how much the vehicle has been driven, irrespective of when it was manufactured, hence determining the strength of the engine. This may also depend on the engine condition like leaking, which would require a thicker type of oil, according to him.
The “Bikula Bonnet and Win” campaign will see motorists who use Shell Helix oil to top up their engine oil service their car, win oil top-ups, service discounts, and other Shell-branded items. The campaign running up to December 22, 2023, is part of the company’s road safety campaign heading into the festive season and will be used to sensitize drivers on safe driving.
It is a common practice for Ugandans to acquire vehicles or retrieve their long-parked cars and use them during the festive season, without going through the proper checks. Kalanzi says a quality lubricant will prevent the engine from failing or knocking.”
