Nutritionists are cautioning inactive and semi-active people to stop consuming energy drinks for recreational purposes.
The experts say such drinks should be left for people in need of high energy burst like athletes.
Energy drinks are beverages that increase physical and mental awareness. They can either be marketed as dietary supplements or carbonated beverages depending on the target audience.
According to nutritionists, while the drinks can increase one’s level of alertness, they are supposed to be consumed by active people that need constant bursts of energy.
Joweria Nambooze, a nutritionist at Africa Innovations Institute, says that if people with inactive or semi-active lives consume energy drinks, it could lead to obesity due to the high amount of sugars stored.
