3 Arrested As Police Probe New Coffee Heist Worth Shs 470 Million

Three people are in custody following a case of stealing goods in transit.

On 29 November, 2024, a case of stealing goods in transit was reported at Kawempe Police Station, prompting an investigation under reference Kawempe CRB 2643/2024.

The investigation revealed that a truck carrying 21,600 kg of coffee beans, valued at Shs 470,000,000, was diverted from its original route from Kasese to an ICD in Nakawa for export on November 29th-30th, 2024. The truck, with registration number UBE 355V, was diverted from Kawempe-Bwaise, and the coffee was then offloaded into other trucks, registration number UBE 355V, and later was transported to Luzira by motor vehicles. Registration number plates UAY 827Q
and UBG 973L, which took the coffee to a company in Luzira to be sold.

The coffee was later rejected and was collected by the purported seller, Juma Musisi, alias Young Mandela, alias Masape, in motor vehicles. Registration number plates UBD 151S and UAM 076N.

Five individuals were arrested and charged with stealing goods in transit. They include:

Juma Musisi, alias Young Mandela alias Masape, 28, a Uagndan national; Keneth Muswabi, 35 A Ugandan National;  ⁠Kalule Medi,  42, Ugandan National, and ⁠Mugabi Martin aged 27.

The suspects appeared in Chief Magistrates Court at Nabweru.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Partick Onyango said efforts are underway to apprehend and charge the remaining suspects, who include Asiimwe Allan, Kato Kiggundu, Joab Mucunguzi, and Saidi Kasule, alias Bogere, who are still at large.

The Uganda Police Force encourages the public to come forth with any information leading to the arrest of the other suspects at large,” said Onyango.
