EC Conducts Regional Engagements With Stakeholders Ahead Of Update Of National Voters Register

Electoral Commission Spokesperson, Julius Mucunguzi

The Electoral Commission (EC) has on Friday, January 10, 2024, conducted regional workshops with key stakeholders ahead of the start of the update of the national voters register. These workshops took place across the  12 regions on the electoral map. For instance, EC Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi was in the Elgon region. Commissioners and other senior management staff were spread across other regions.

EC Spokesman Julius Mucunguzi said the workshops are for purposes of inclusion and participation in a bid to achieve a free, fair, and credible election.

“The general update of the national voters register is a critical exercise that requires the participation and input of all stakeholders,” said Mucunguzi, adding: “The national voters register is the foundation of credible elections. It determines who can vote, be a candidate, or participate in the electoral process. Therefore, it is essential that we get it right.”

The workshops aim to bring on board key stakeholders, including their ideas, opinions, concerns, and views, to ensure the success and impact of the general update exercise.

“The Electoral Commission is committed to ensuring that the electoral process is inclusive, transparent, and credible,” Mucunguzi added. He urged all stakeholders to participate in these regional workshops and contribute to the success of the general update exercise.

According to Mucunguzi, a free, fair, credible, and transparent election is a responsibility of all stakeholders.

The general update of the national voters register is scheduled to commence on January 20, 2025, and will end on February 10, 2025.
