The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has seized banned cosmetics that were being transported as sand.
In a statement, URA says its Mpondwe enforcement team intercepted a suspicious ‘truck full of sand’ and dug deep and beyond the trickery that smugglers of banned cosmetics had conjured.
This incident occurred last Thursday after a vigilant citizen alerted the enforcement team about a vehicle Reg No. UAW 558Q’s suspicious movement, Ian Rumanyika, the Manager Public & Corporate Affairs at URA said.
“Intelligence gathered pointed to the fact that the vehicle was conveying banned contraband,” Rumanyika said, adding that at about 21.30 hours, the vehicle drove into a customs protected zone at Kinyamaseke but to the team’s disappointment, it was ostensibly carrying sand.
“The officers insisted on a physical examination and after removing a few spadefuls of sand, concealed cosmetics were revealed,” URA says, adding that in total, 30 cartons of banned cosmetics were recovered.
Rumanyika says offense management kicked off immediately.
