WHO Evacuates Staff After UN Base In Beni, DRC Is Set Ablaze By Angry Protesters

The World Health Organization (WHO) says it has evacuated 49 of its staff from the town of Beni in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo because of the worsening security situation, following attacks on a UN base and the mayor’s office.

They are described as non-essential staff who have been working to end the Ebola outbreak. A WHO spokesman said more than 70 colleagues would remain there.

On Monday, two people were killed in clashes with police after protesters set fire to the mayor of Beni’s office and several UN buildings.

The violence was an angry response to an escalation of attacks by armed groups in the region.

People are demanding better protection from the Congolese army and UN peacekeepers.
