Tycoon Abid Alam: I Need Speedy Trial Because I’m Sick & Extremely Busy Man

Businessman Abid Alam and D/SP Wanyama Wilber Osteen attached to Wamala Regional Police Headquarters have asked Buganda road court to dismiss the case in which the duo are  alleged to have conspired to defeat the course of justice, by unlawfully sharing  information in a case file where Alam was the subject.

Through their Lawyers Henry Amanya and Paul Rutisya, the accused persons informed presiding Magistrate Acaa Ketty Joan that it is more than four times now when their case is being mentioned and adjourned without taking into consideration their constitutional right to a speedy and fair trial.

Abid also claims that he is sick and extremely busy man who is always travelling, while Wanyama is on interdiction because of this case which means his source of income is grossly affected.

In her reply, the Resident State Attorney Janet Kitimbo applied to court to give DPP the last adjournment attributing the delay of this case and many others to the COVID-19 pandemic that also invaded their offices that prompted most of them to be sent away for quarantine.

It’s against this background that Magistrate Acaa Ketty Joan adjourned the case to 16th October 2020 giving the DPP the last chance to prosecute Abid Alam and the Police Officer.

They are alleged to have committed the offence on 8th/April/2020 between Mityana Regional Police Office and Ntinda a suburb of Kampala, but have since denied the charges and are out on bail.

Abid was arrested in April/2020 by State House Anti-corruption Unit headed by Lt Col Nakalema over destruction of property in a land dispute with some residents in Kasanda District.
