Tembo Steels (U) Ltd (TSUL), one of the most diversified and integrated manufacturers of steel products in Uganda and Africa at large, is revolutionizing the steel industry, thanks to the company’s resilience of innovation.

The company has one of the largest product portfolio in Africa covering all four verticals of steel.

Manish Kalla, the General Manager at Tembo Steels (U) Ltd, says the company offers a number of quality products including but not limited to TMX, Hollow Sections, Angles, Nails, Round Bars, Square Bars, Binding Wire, Wire Rod and BRCs.

TSUL recently launched a new product; the Tembo TMX, a game changer in the steel manufacturing industry in Uganda. It is made with the help of German technology.

Kalla says their products mainly target construction and engineering companies, hardware dealers and outlets, and individuals at both local and international markets.

“Tembo Steels has the highest production capacity for its products; with our DRI capacity being 300,000 tons, liquid steel being 550,000 tons, TMT 260,000 tons, Section 160,000 tons, Wire rod 260,000tons, HRC for Tube / Open Profile 100,000 tons,” says Kalla, adding that the company has the biggest market share in the steel sector in Uganda.

Internationally Recognized

Founded in 2000, TSUL operates two plants;  one in Lugazi and the other in Iganga District. The company is  ISO 9001:2015 certified.

Kalla says they sought this certification because it is internationally recognized. TSUL is also Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) certified, Kenya Bureau of Standards (KBS) certified and Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) certified.

“We do this because we serve markets around East Africa and the world at large. These certifications help us build trust with our clients hence building affirm and lasting relationship,” Kalla explains, adding: “Our products are designed to build strong and lasting structures that can be used for many generations and withstand all kinds of weather.”

He reveals that TSUL is the first company in the world to produce 0.7mm hot rolled sheets through continuous configuration and the first in the world to convert cast iron into liquid low carbon steel.

“Tembo Steels is synonymous with strength, high quality, affordability, accessibility and timely delivery. Our brand promises our customers loyalty, affordability, and premium quality. True to our name “Tembo” (Swahili word for elephant), we are strong, sensitive and have long life,” Kalla says.

To ensure quality, TSUL has a quality assurance department and labs that test the company’s products at every level of production right from raw materials to finished products.

The future

Kalla says Tembo Steels continues to register growth every year.

“The next five years will definitely be bigger in everything- market share and growth as we intend to conquer even more markets at the international level,” Kalla says.
