Authorities at Uganda’s Maximum Prison, Luzira, have reportedly blocked visitors from accessing jailed Don Stella Nyanzi.
According to reports from Luzira, the Makerere University doctored who is on remand over charges of cyber harassment has also been denied access to her children.
“JUST IN: Luzira Prison authorities are blocking all @drstellanyanzi’s visitors. Her Children have been blocked too,” Shawn Mubiru, a member of her ‘support’ team wrote.
Nyanzi, a research fellow at Uganda’s Makerere University, appeared in a court in the capital, Kampala, on Monday after being detained at a hotel on Friday shortly after hosting a fundraising drive to raise money for sanitary pads for schoolgirls.
Nyanzi, a mother of three, has repeatedly criticised both Museveni, who has ruled since 1986, and the first lady. She has taken aim at the government’s failure to fulfil its commitment to provide sanitary pads to all schoolgirls, which was a campaign promise before the 2016 elections.
After the education ministry said the promise could not be fulfilled for economic reasons, Nyanzi launched the #Pads4girlsUg campaign and a crowdfunding page to raise money to buy and distribute them herself. It was after a fundraiser for this cause on 7 April that she was arrested.
