Parliament Rejects Bill Seeking To Give Tax Relief To Companies That Offered Gov’t COVID-19 Donations

Minister David Bahati withdrew the Bill from Parliament after it was rejected

Parliament has rejected the Income amendment Tax Bill 2020 which was seeking to offer among other things tax relief to the companies that offered donations to Government in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Cecilia Ogwal, the Dokolo District Woman MP disagreed with the proposal, saying that the donations were given voluntarily and there is no need to exempt them from taxes.

She said that voluntary donation should not be attached to tax relief, adding that it’s not Ugandan culture for donations to benefit from tax relief measures.

Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the Budadadiri West lawmaker, said that anybody who donates and files the tax returns should claim the tax relief.

Johnathan Odur, the Erute South MP, said that it will be difficult to ascertain the value of some donations which they extended to government for tax exemption.

He said that some of the companies that donated to government would be using this window to exploit taxpayers.

Against the MPs’ arguments, the Minister of State for Planning, David Bahati withdrew this Bill from Parliament.
