MTN Disconnects 750,000 Subscribers As Revenue Grows 10%

The MTN Group on March 8, 2018 released financial results for 2017.

The results indicate that at 31 December 2017, MTN Group had 217 million subscribers based on the “new modernised definitions”. We will provide comparisons for full year 2018 using the new base.

The results further indicate that MTN Uganda disconnected 750, 000 subscribers which the company says were “regulatory related”.

“The subscriber base [for Uganda] closed the year at 10.7 million, driven by attractive personalized bundled products introduced at the end of 2016, improved network quality and effective distribution,” the company says, adding:” Total revenue increased by 10.0% (Shs1.4trillion), supported by the strong growth in data and digital revenues.”

The company says data revenue for MTN Uganda increased by 41.4%, underpinned by an increase in data traffic and good growth in data bundle adoption.

“Active data subscribers [for MTN Uganda] closed the year at 1.5 million. Digital revenue increased by 16.1%,” the results further reveal.

The number of active Mobile Money customers increased by 27,6% to 5,2 million.
