Ministry Of Health To Set Up Covid-19 Vaccination Centres In Universities

Covid-19 vaccination centres are to be set up in universities to increase vaccine uptake among students and staff.

While lifting the second lockdown President Yoweri Museveni allowed higher institutions to reopen on 1st November 2021. He called upon lecturers as well as non-teaching staff to get vaccinated.

On Monday universities turned away Covid-19 unvaccinated students. At Kyambogo University, students and staff with COVID-19 vaccination cards were granted access to the university premises. Bugema and Kampala Universities did not allow non-vaccinated students from attending lecturers.

Following the reopening for physical learning, all higher institutions of learning will now have Covid-19 vaccination centres within their premises starting on November 15.

Addressing journalists at the Media Centre on Friday, the Minister of Health Jane Ruth Aceng said that tertiary institutions will have outreach sites for vaccination while all universities will have vaccinations sites within the campus.

Aceng appealed to the students and staff to embrace the vaccination since it has been brought closer to them.

Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, said while the university hospital is carrying out vaccination of staff and students, he welcomes the initiative of setting up the vaccination centres within the university premises.

Nawangwe said that he will mobilize the students and staff to embrace the vaccination exercise.

The government targets to vaccinate a population of 22 Million people above 18 years by end of 2022. Among these are students from institutions of higher learning.
