Ministry Of Agriculture Vehicle Intercepted Carrying Illicit Waragi

Security forces manning Matany checkpoint intercept a government car loaded with illicit gin

Police in Napak district have intercepted a government vehicle, a Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number UG 2524, loaded with 16 jerrycans of illicit gin (waragi) en route to Moroto district.

The vehicle, belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF), was stopped by Anti-Stock Theft Unit personnel at the Kokeris checkpoint along the Soroti-Moroto Road.

According to Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto regional police spokesperson, the security officers at the Matany checkpoint discovered the jerrycans of illicit waragi covered with a tarpaulin during a routine check.

In response, the two occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, Robert Wawomula, were detained at Moroto Central Police Station to assist in the ongoing investigations.

“Although our personnel who are manning checkpoints have not been so keen on Government cars, it has now come to our attention that even Government cars are also used in this illicit business,’’ Longole said. He emphasized the need for stricter scrutiny of government vehicles entering the area to prevent them from being involved in criminal activities.

The interception serves as a wake-up call for law enforcement to be vigilant and not overlook government vehicles in their efforts to combat the illicit trade of waragi and other prohibited substances.
