The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), through the Department of Crop Protection (DCP), has intensified its response to banana rust thrips in South Western Uganda by deploying technical teams to work with Local Government and conduct targeted farmer trainings. Districts including Rwampara, Mbarara, Ibanda, Kamwenge, Mityana, Mpigi, Kasanda, and Mubende are receiving hands-on demonstrations and capacity building to equip extension staff and farming communities with practical, science-based approaches to disease identification and management.
These efforts underscore Uganda’s commitment to safeguarding banana production through proactive, localized interventions.
In a statement dated October 08, 2025, MAAIF said, central to the control strategy is the promotion of environmentally sound solutions, particularly Neem-based formulations such as Neem oil and extracts.
“These natural products offer effective pest and fungal control while preserving ecological balance and ensuring safety for farmers, consumers, and beneficial organisms. Complementing these measures, DCP has developed and disseminated Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials to reinforce best practices in field sanitation, early detection, and crop husbandry. Farmers are advised to apply interventions at the flowering stage, use clean planting materials, and avoid transferring infected suckers between farms,” MAAIF said, adding: “Ongoing surveillance confirms that the banana rust thrips situation remains localized and under control. MAAIF continues to monitor affected areas closely, ensuring timely support and community sensitization to prevent further spread. This integrated approach reflects Uganda’s broader agricultural vision—one that prioritizes resilience, food security, and sustainable growth through inclusive, environmentally responsible practices.”

I’m currently doing a study on this very areas. Thanks for the information.
