Kyambogo Won’t Give Students Masks & Sanitizers When University Re-Opens

Kyambogo University final year students will resume their studies in October 2020, but students will be required to buy masks and sanitizers for themselves.

Addressing the press at the University this morning, Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Elly Katunguka said that the University has 11,943 finalists’ students, with teaching set to commence on October 19th and end on November 13th 2020, while exams will begin on November 16th and end on November 29th 2020.

This is after President Yoweri Museveni announced the reopening of education institutions following their closure in March 2020 to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Uganda.

“Students should carry their own sanitizers and masks since there will be no any other allowance from government students to cater for requirements like procuring masks and sanitizers for students,” Prof. Katunguka said.

Detailing some of the measures put in place to contain the deadly disease, Katunguka revealed that the University’s halls of residence will be fumigated and halls will be filled to half capacity.

 “All students’ property will be disinfected before accessing halls of residence at all halls of residence there will be hand washing facilities,” he said.

The University management has also suspended all team sports during this session but individual physical exercises for fitness purposes will be allowed but recognizing recommended social distancing practices.

Katunguka also added that the University medical center has also put in place protocols for referral of suspected COVID 19 cases assisted by the 24 hour ambulances services and emergency numbers will be displayed on all notice boards for quick action.

 “The infection control and prevention committee has been constituted to ensure implementation of infection control at the medical center and the University and screening area for isolation of suspected COVID 19 cases has been put in place,” he said.

He also warned students, parents and guardians that no student will be allowed into examination room unless they have paid all fees required.

For the Government-sponsored students, they should come armed with own resources because the University won’t pay them a penny because they had received their food and living out allowances for semester two and no special arrangement will be made for them.
