Kutesa Woos Egyptians To Invest In Uganda

Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa has called for increased investments targeting livelihood enhancement. Kutesa made the plea during events commemorating the 66th anniversary of the Egyptian revolution, a day defined as a turning point in the history and independence of Egypt.

Kutesa observed that although Egypt has supported the political, economic and social development of Uganda, there is a dire need for them to venture into sectors that boost people’s livelihood. He cited the areas livestock, energy and ICT among others.

Kutesa, however, noted that government has received some more experts in transformers production. This is part of a memorandum that allows Egyptian businessmen to manufacture pre-paid electricity metres and transformers in Uganda.

Egyptian Ambassador Tarek Sallam pledged that the Egyptian government shall continue supporting Uganda by aiding development projects aimed at improving the lives of communities.

In May this year, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed three memoranda of understanding in the fields of electricity, agriculture, and the construction and management of industrial zones.

According to a statement issued after the signing ceremonies, the first MOU is between Uganda’s energy ministry and its Egyptian counterpart to establish a 4-megawatt solar power plant in Uganda, the second is regarding the development of agriculture in both countries and the third, is between the Egyptian Industrial Development Authority and the Uganda Investment Authority.
