Health Concerns As 33 Genetic Research Chickens Are Stolen From Gulu University

Thirty-three hens meant for genetic research at Gulu University-Main Campus have vanished without a trace raising health concerns among experts. They are part of 56 chickens that were collected from different parts of Uganda for Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) studies aimed at improving indigenous breeds as well as transform and boost chicken productivity in Northern Uganda.

The University management and researchers say that the chickens that were being used for research on genetic breeding disappeared mysteriously over the weekend from the chicken pen at the Main Campus at Pece-Laroo division in Gulu City.

Geoffrey Beyihayo Akikii, a lecturer and Researcher at Gulu University in the department of Animal production, says that the disappearance of the chicken has raised fear for the health of the people who might eat them.

He disclosed that prior to their disappearance, the chickens had been injected with several genetic modification chemicals, which are dangerous for human health, adding that and once eaten they may cause cancer.

Much as the University has reported the disappearance of the chickens at Gulu Central Police Station, they are also running radio announcements calling for vigilance among the people and urging them not to eat any suspicious chickens because of the health risks including cancer.

By the time of their disappearance, the fairly big multi-colored chickens had metallic tags pinned on their wings. James Onono Ojok, the Gulu University Assistant Public Relations Officer told URN on Wednesday evening that a search for the missing chickens is ongoing.

URN has since received information that three people from Gulu University have recorded statements at Gulu Central Police Station over the disappearance of the chickens.
