Entebbe Airport Recorded 1.57M Passengers In 2022 As Aviation Industry Recovers From COVID-19 Restrictions

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has revealed that the total number of arriving and departing passengers was 1,574,405 in 2022, compared to 941,688 in 2021.

Vianney M. Luggya, the UCAA Spokesman, says  565,541 passengers were recorded  in 2020 as the country and the world faced travel restrictions due to COVID-19 induced lockdowns. In 2019 before COVID-19 struck, Entebbe Airport recorded 1,802,107 passengers.

“The post COVID-19 recovery is at 87%,” Luggya says.

He adds that the airport recorded a total cargo of 61,066 tonnes in 2022 compared to 64,172 tones in 2021. 59,720 tonnes of cargo were recorded in 2020 and 64,701 tonnes in 2019.

“There are more exports than imports,” Luggya says, adding that the airport recorded 5,014 metric tonnes (imports 1,752 and exports 3,262) in January 2023.

He further says that Entebbe International Airport recorded 149,375 passengers in January 2023  (72,934 arriving and 76,441 departing passengers), an average of 4,818 per day,  compared to a total of 110,547 passengers in the same period of January 2022.

“In December 2022, the airport recorded 156,790 passengers compared to 123,576 in the same period of December  2021,” Luggya says.
