Dfcu Bank Joins ‘Keep A Girl In School’ Campaign

dfcu Bank has today joined Uganda Red Cross Society in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sports to launch a campaign dubbed ‘Keep a Girl in school’ that will enable thousands of school going girls gain access to knowledge and support in ‘Menstrual Hygiene Management’.

This was unveiled at an event held at Mackay Memorial College in Kampala.

The main objective of this initiative is to improve Menstrual Health Management among primary and secondary school going adolescent girls and young women across the country. This Initiative is directly in line with the community development pillar of dfcu’s Corporate Social Investment Policy. Educating the girl child is considered pivotal to empowering women and ultimately empowering communities.

Speaking at the launch, dfcu Bank’s Public Sector (Corporate) representative, Carolyn Andama said, “The ‘Keeping a girl in school’ campaign is about supporting girls not only manage menstrual hygiene but also deal with self-awareness and confidence.

Today’s young girls will grow up to become tomorrow’s women entrepreneurs so it is imperative that we come together to collectively give them a chance to stay in school and live up to their full potential.

dfcu Bank has been at the helm of driving women economic empowerment initiatives since 2007 and has successfully done so through its Women in Business Program. She further reaffirmed dfcu Bank’s commitment to the upliftment of the community in which it operates in and its brand promise of ‘Making more possible’ for school going girls who miss 12 days of school each term because they cannot afford sanitary materials.

When it comes to education, the fact that two-thirds of Uganda’s women are classified as functionally illiterate means that we have the challenge to ensure that there is better access for women and girls to education.

“In addition to our corporate contribution towards this initiative our employees are very receptive of this initiative and each of them will be supporting one girl with UGX 50,000 to keep her in school for at least two years. With a workforce of over 1000 we anticipate that a significant number of girls will benefit from our support.  Looking at Uganda in the next 20 years, we want all women and girls to be economically empowered, with that, women can make decisions for themselves and their children to make life better for the future generations. We believe this is possible if there is concerted effort to keep the girls in school,” Andama added.
