Anthony Akol raising the matter
The curriculum for learners waiting to join Advanced level education (A ‘level) remains unclear and this has raised concern among some legislators.
The Ministry of Education and Sports introduced a competence-based syllabus for Ordinary level (O’level) and the pioneers of the syllabus were examined by the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) last year.
Kilak North County Hon. Anthony Akol said that whereas UNEB is likely to release the results in two-weeks’, schools are not sure of the syllabus that will be used to teach learners.
Akol raised the concern as a matter of national importance during the plenary sitting on Wednesday, 22 January 2022.
Akol said that he took the initiative to seek clarification from the Minister of State for Higher Education, Hon. Chrysostom Muyingo who said that an abridged version of the syllabus will be used to teach the learners.
“At the same time, the teachers I have interacted with have not been trained and do not even have the syllabus now,” said Akol.
He added that the Committee of Education raised the same matter before the Ministry of Education and the ministers said that development of the syllabus was previously unfunded, but it has been budgeted for in the 2025/2026 financial year.
“Four years ago, they were all aware that there is need for this lot of people to graduate to A’level. One wonders how such an important issue is classified under unfunded priority,” Akol said.
He urged the Minister of Education to give a way forward, saying that absence of the syllabus has left parents and learners confused.
“The Ministry of Education should bring to this floor the way forward. At the same time, something needs to be done now because we are going to lose this particular lot of people as a result of no proper curriculum,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa directed the Minister of Education to provide a response on Thursday, 23 January 2025.
