Smart Applications International, Sanlam Drop Use Of Papers As Electronic Data Interchange Is Launched

Smart Applications International Uganda Limited, a biometric technology solutions company has partnered with Sanlam Life Insurance Ltd to digitize healthcare claims processes through a rollout of a web-based Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

Instead of pushing papers manually from the medical facilities to the insurer, the process will now go digital and will give real time data.

“Smart believes that the launch of EDI will be a game changer in the medical industry. It will not only improve the claims submission process but will create a better working relationship between the medical insurance providers and medical health facilities,” Smart Applications Country Manager, Judy Mugoya, said Tuesday during the launch at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.

According to Partison Ndyamuhaki, the Head of Medical at Sanlam, solution will aid effectiveness and efficiency.

“We found it best to adopt the Smart EDI platform for the value proposition it presents to Sanlam. This platform will enhance our relationship with medical facilities as will Sanlam receive full claim management (e-claim capture, reconciliation and vetting, e-claim submission, diagnosis, item capture, standardization in claims management, improve turn around time for provider submission for improved real time reconciliation and payment,” Ndyamuhaki said.

Ndyamuhaki says that the digitization is part ofSanlam’s 2023 agenda of automating all healthcare claims.

Smart Applications Group Managing Director, Harrison Muiru, says that digitization of the health facilities in Uganda and across Africa is the way to go.

“We see ourselves as partners in the national healthcare agenda. We are proud to introduce this platform (EDI) for better reach, effectiveness and efficiency in the medical sector,” Muiru said.

While delivering a key note speech, Mulago Hospital Board Chairman, Dr. Edward Kanyesigye, said there is need to embrace innovation and utilize the available opportunities to improve health systems by providing innovative, secure and high-tech solutions for the sector at national and regional level.

According to Dr. Kamwesigye, the solution will foster better service delivery and enhance relationships between key stakeholders within the medical sector.

Dr. Kanyesigye appealed to the Insurance sector to embrace technology and innovation and adopt EDI as a standard practice in eliminating service provision challenges.

    Electronic data interchange is not just an advancement that will benefit service providers in healthcare.
