Stella Nyanzi, Two Students Arrested Over Dead MUK Student Tegu Protests

Ugandan police have arrested academic and activist Stella Nyanzi and two Makerere University students.

The three had been protesting over last week’s death of a student, Emmanuel Tegu, allegedly following an assault at the university.

The Daily Monitor reports that they were arrested while walking to parliament to present a petition demanding justice for the killed student.

Nyanzi is a writer, researcher and former lecturer at the university.

The outspoken academic is an unapologetic critic of President Yoweri Museveni.

She has spent time in jail for an poem she posted on social media that was deemed abusive to the president and his late mother — and was only released in February after a successful appeal.
