Speaker Among has asked the Ministry of Education and Sports to issue guidelines to schools to deter the current practice where learners are transported on trucks like cattle, warning that if the practice isn’t stopped, tragedy may occur in Uganda.
“Children are being transported in those cattle trucks and you wonder which kind of school is this and these vehicles have ended up getting accidents and people’s children end up dying. So, the Minister of Education really has to give guidelines to that effect,” said Among.
Her remarks followed a concern raised by Sarah Opendi (Tororo Woman MP) who noted that although Government outlawed the transportation of learners on trucks, the practice is still ongoing and will pick up as schools prepare for athletics competitions.
“We have an issue currently and I don’t want us to see children dying tomorrow yet we clearly know that Government outlawed the transporting of children on trucks, we have seen schools still transporting children on truck and now that they are into sports competitions, the championships are being held at national level, we will see children transported in trucks. We need guidance from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Education,” said Opendi.
