Police Speak Out On Grenade Attacks At MPs’ Homes

Police have confirmed the attack on three opposition legislators’ homes, saying factory made hand grenades were used.

“We have established with the help of our experts these are factory made hand grenades with less shattering effect,” reads a statement by Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Emillian Kayima.

The police statement comes a few hours after the Makindye West Member of Parliament, Allan Ssewanyana and his Kyadondo West counterpart, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine complained of grenade attacks on their homes.

“People have thrown a grenade/explosive at my home 1:20am……need some rescue…I’m told the same has happened to Hon Kyagulanyi’s home,” reads a message posted on Ssewanyana’s Facebook page in the wee hours of this morning. Ssewanyana also posted the photos fragments of the explosive that spread in his compound found in his home in Makindye, a Kampala city suburb.

The Kyadondo West MP, Robert Kyagulanyi shared a similar statement. “Grenades have for the second time in two days been thrown at my house and exploded. Property damaged and no one hurt! But what kind of country are we now living in?” Kyagulanyi posted on his Facebook wall.

The MP explained that he had decided to ignore the blasts and the threats but it seems they are now getting real. “Let me announce to the whole world that these past days I have been receiving death threats on an almost daily basis. I have also been advised by some friends who know more than I know that I should be very careful what I eat or drink, how I drive and from where, whom I meet, even who touches me while I go to Parliament,” he said.
