Parliament is considering amending the rules of parliament to start a virtual parliament system of debate.
The Speaker Rebecca Kadaga yesterday directed the Rules Committee of Parliament to amend the rules of procedure, saying this will allow a number of MPs to take part in a debate through a Zoom app while others sit in the chamber.
She said a number of Parliaments world over are adopting virtual parliaments due to COVID-19 pandemic.
A virtual parliament system of debate when is adopted would also minimize crowding of the parliamentary chamber and avoid the risk of spreading the COVID-19.
Uganda’s Parliament currently has 458 members of parliament and due to measures issued out by Parliament to fight COVID -19, the Parliamentary chamber is now accessed by only 80 lawmakers during plenary.
