Parliament has rejected the request by Gov’t to exempt businessman Donati Kananura from paying taxes worth Shs2.69 trillion on the basis that he suffers from diabetes and prostate enlargement that left him incapacitated to pay his taxes.
However, MPs say the reasons fronted for the exemption aren’t convincing.
Amos Kankunda, Chairperson Finance Committee told Parliament that the Ministry of Finance had requested to exempt Kananura Value Added Tax of Shs1.28 trillion and rental income tax worth Shs1.14 trillion but after failing to convince the Committee, Government was forced to drop the proposal.
“While processing this request, the Committee was not convinced on the basis for the application of a tax waiver by the tax payer. Accordingly, the Minister conceded and withdrew the tax waiver request by Mr. Donati Kananura. In compliance with Rule, 199(4), the Committee guided the Minister to formally withdraw the request on the floor of the House,” said Kankunda.
In August 2024, Henry Musasizi, Minister of State for Finance asked Parliament to exempt Real-estates dealer Kananura of his outstanding liabilities on grounds that the taxpayer had diabetes pressure, prostate enlargement and loss of sight and that most of his income goes into expenses related to these ailments, which has left him sink into high indebtedness with loans obtained for property acquisition, development and renovations.
