Parliament has called for an audit on sugarcane factories to establish their financial status and production capacity.
Solomon Silwany, the Member of Parliament for Bukoli central in Bugiri district Solomon Silwany yesterday while raising the matter of national concern on the floor of Parliament said that farmers growing sugarcane in Busoga and supplying cane to factories take six months to be paid.
He said that sugar cane farmers are denied permits while the sugar factories declare their revenue.
To this, he pleaded to the government to carry out a forensic audit on all the sugar cane factories to establish their financial status and sugar production capacity.
The lawmaker asked the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to audit all the sugar cane factories’ financial accounts to enable the government revoke licenses of all the sugar factories found guilty of under-declaring taxes to the government on top of exploiting sugar farmers.
Responding to Silwany’s concern, the deputy Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, directed the Finance Ministry; Trade and Economic Monitoring to investigate the matter and report to Parliament for action to be taken against such sugar factories causing revenue loss to the government.
