Farmers in Omoro District have embraced pig husbandry under Operation Wealth Creation – OWC aimed at alleviating poverty.
More than 40 individual farmers have been identified by the District Agriculture Department to benefit from the piggery agribusiness expected to enhance their household income, and improve livelihoods.
The selected farmers have been supplied with three piglets; a boar and two sows which they are supposed to breed to give more piglets to benefit other interested farmers willing to do piggery.
On 30 August 2021, Government through OWC delivered 100 piglets that benefited 33 individual farmers. The second consignment of 54 piglets was delivered last week and distributed to 18 beneficiary farmers.
Jimmy Okoyo Latigo, a beneficiary of the piglets from Acet Central village in Odek Sub-County says he aims to rear the pigs and multiply them to enable him to supply other farmers in the entire district.
Juliet Akello, another beneficiary farmer from Palenga Town Council says she has embraced the piggery business to enable diversify her sources of income and be able to develop her capacity to a large scale farmer in the district.
Andrew Onyuk, the Resident District Commissioner whose office will monitor the initiative says that the piglet supplies underscore the Government’s vision to create wealth through sustainable income sources in the country.
The overall objective of OWC, a Presidential Initiative is to create a system that facilitates effective national socio-economic transformation with a focus on raising household incomes.
The farmers have asked the district to design the appropriate training routine to cover care and feeding of gestating sows, lactating sows, herd health management, marketing and financial management to make the business lucrative.
