President Yoweri Museveni will today launch the Sino-Uganda Industrial Park in Mbale, a year after he commissioned its construction.
According to a tweet by the president, the park is expected to create 15, 000 direct jobs.
“Last year, I commissioned the construction of Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park as part of the industrialization agenda, where a total of 22 industrial parks will be created across the country. Today I will launch this completed project which will bring 15,000 jobs directly,” Museveni tweeted.
The park is located in the Mbale City, eastern part of Uganda, it covers an area of 2.51 square kilometers, 220 kilometers away from Kampala, the capital of Uganda, 65 kilometers from the Kenyan border.
“Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park” is the first national industrial park constructed overseas by Hebei province.
The park has a capacity of 60 factories and efforts are being made to attract more investors, according to Mr Paul Zhang, chairman Sino- Uganda Mbale industrial Park.
This park has among other factories; Pearl Light Technologies which is manufacturing LED bulbs, Ubon Personal Care which manufactures washing detergent, and Victoria Cables which is manufacturing electric cables.
The government is also drafting a new policy requiring investors to purchase raw materials in areas where the companies are located to ensure that local materials and labour force are prioritised.
