Man Abandons Children After Failing To Pay Rent Worth 500K

A father in Busia district has abandoned his two children in a rented house after failing to pay rent amounting to Shillings 490,000 for the last seven months.

George Mulwani, 34, abandoned his children aged 6 and 8 years in the house of David Okumu, a resident of Mawero East B village in Eastern division of Busia Municipality in October this year.  Okumu says that he is stranded with the minors in his business house for the last one month.

He says that the minors are now surviving on the neighbor’s mercy.  According to Okumu, the minor’s father rented his room at Shillings 70,000 but has not paid rent since May to up to date. He says that he has made several made phone calls to Mulwani’s father in Mayuge district to come and pick the children in vain.

Faith Sekita, a member of the Mawero East B village local council has appealed to relevant authorities to help and take care of the minors.

Paul Ouma, an officer from the Child protection coalition- CPC, a non-governmental organization, says that they have opened up a case of child negligence at Busia central police station against Mulwani.

He says that they have in the meantime handed over the minors to one of the village committee members as they source for funds to support them.

Efforts to contact George Mulwani through the phone number availed by the landlord were futile. The lady who picked the number said it was the wrong number.
