Makerere University Students Set To Get Laptops At Subsidized Prices

Makerere University will soon ink a deal with global Technology giants, Microsoft, Dell and Google that will see students and staff receive laptops at subsidized prices, the University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe (pictured) has revealed.

Nawangwe made the announcement yesterday through his Twitter handle writing, “We are going to engage giant tech companies with Covid-19 education response initiatives to supply our staff and students with laptops at hugely subsidized rates. Priority will be tech companies we already work with including Microsoft, Google, and Dell.”

Recently Nawangwe held meetings with Uganda Telecom companies to strike deal that would see students access study materials at a free cost.

The proposal was first fronted by MTN Uganda before other players like Airtel and Africell also reached out to the University promising the same offer.

“My meeting with the MD of Airtel Uganda, Mr. Somasekhar was mutually engaging. We have agreed to follow up the proposal of Zero rating our websites by Airtel to enable our students and staff access online facilities free of charge. I thank Mr. Soma for this exciting opportunity,” wrote Nawangwe.

On Africel meeting, Nawangwe wrote, “I have held a successful meeting with Mr. Ziad CEO of @AfricellUG on opportunities for collaboration between Makerere & Africell. We have discussed the implementation of Zero rating of Mak websites to enable our students and staff access our E-Learning facilities free of charge.”
