Jamir Kamoga and Fatumah Nakanwagi, the son and sister respectively of the Late Sserubogo, the former LC5 Chairperson of Kayunga district
Two family members of the late Muhammad Ffeffeka Sserubogo, the former Kayunga LC V chairperson are among those lined up for vetting to replace him. They are Fatuma Nakanwagi, 38, a sister to the late Sserubogo and his son, Jamir Kamoga, 27.
The two are among four people shortlisted for vetting by the National Unity Platform-NUP political party secretariat on Monday. The others are Rajab Ssenkubuge and Harriet Nakwede.
Ben Moses Ojambo, the Kayunga District NUP Party Chairperson, says that the four part of the 23 people who expressed interest to secure the party card to replace the Sserubogo who passed away, a month after occupying office.
He says that they dropped other applicants through mediation but none of the remaining aspirants was willing to step down.
NUP secretariat will finalize the vetting of the candidates on Monday ahead of the nominations by the electoral commission on November 29th and 30th, 2021. Candidates will between December 2nd to 14th 2021 followed by polling on December 16th, 2021.
Jamir Kamoga, a teacher of Chemistry and Physics at St. Mary’s College Lugazi, says that he decided to compete for the party ticket following the overwhelming appeals from residents encouraging him to follow in the footsteps of his father.
“I did not have intentions of standing for the position but the overwhelming requests from residents forced me. I thought turning down the position would be failing the legacy of my father. I am seeking the party card to contest for the district chairmanship to complete his mission which includes transforming the education system, health sector, road network and proper service delivery,” Kamoga notes.
Sserubogo’s sister, Fatumah Nakanwagi is confident that the party will entrust her with the flag to contest and take the district forward.
Nakwede’s campaigning manager, Ssegujja Kamulegeya says that her candidate has the strongest support base given the fact that she competed in the previous general elections for a different position that took her around the entire district.
Nakwede ran of the district woman MP seat and lost to the incumbent, Idah Nantaba.
Alex Lwanyaga, the NUP Electoral Commission secretary, says that the party has made enough research that will lead to the identification of the best candidate. Other parties have endorsed flag bearers without going through any vetting process.
The Democratic Party has endorsed Anthony Waddimba, the National Resistance Movement, Andrew Muwonge while the acting FDC Kayunga chairperson, Francis Mutyaba, says that they are still making arrangements.
