Gulu University has defended its decision to recruit staff amid the COVID-19 pandemic that has left many organizations financially limping.

The University officials led by Acting University Secretary, Asaf Adebua today appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to respond to the auditor general’s queries.

PAC Chairperson, Nandala Mafabi questioned the University officials why the appointments board of the university sat and recruited 62 members of staff during COVID-19 pandemic.

In response, Adebua informed MPs that the recruitment was for members of academic staff, renewal of contracts of staff and extension of contracts.

Mafabi however questioned the criteria they used to identify the staff to which the heads of accounts John Nyeko clarified that these were already staff within the university.

The MPs further questioned why these did not wait until after COVID-19 is over, but Adebua said that as a university they were only preparing for work.
