General Kayihura Apologizes As He Ends Police ‘Tour Of Duty’

Uganda’s outgoing police chief, General Kale Kayihura has apologized to all those he could have offended as he executed his duty as Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Kayihura made these remarks at the Police headquarters in Naguru, an upscale suburb in Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

“I never thought I would be the longest serving IGP, I’m extremely indebted to the President and commander in chief for this honor to serve in this capacity. I may have failed short in my assignment and I deeply regret,” a remorseful Kayihura clad in full general military ceremonial fatigues said.

He added, “During my term of office, in case there are some feet I stepped on, I am Sorry. I was only doing my job.”

Kayihura revealed that despite the negative image in the recent past, the force is built on a solid foundation.

“In spite of the recent bad image, I’m handing over a police force that is much better shaped than when I took over and no one can deny that. I believe strongly that the force is now built on a stronger foundation and is heading in the right direction,” Kayihura said.

New Police boss Okoth Ochola (R) and his deputy Brig Muzeeyi Sabiiti take in a joke at the handover

Kayihura spent 12 years at the help of the country’s police force making him the longest serving IGP. He was last week fired and replaced by his deputy Okoth Ochola. Military Police boss, Brigadier, Muzeeyi Sabiiti was appointed deputy IGP in the changes.

“It is a pleasure that today, I am handing over to you. I really enjoyed working with you,” Kayihura told Ochola.

Internal Affairs Minister, General Jeje Odongo presided over the ceremony that was also attended by his deputy, Obiga Kania.
