Chief Justice Receives URA CG’s Award, Commends URA-Judiciary Partnership

The Commissioner General’s Award for the Best Strategic Partner – (Ministries, Departments and Agencies category) won by The Judiciary at the Taxpayers Appreciation Awards Gala, 2018 has been officially handed over to the Chief Justice of Uganda, Hon. Justice Bart Magunda Katureebe by the URA Ag Commissioner General, Patrick Mukiibi.

He was  flanked by the Commissioner Legal Services and Board Affairs, Patience T Rubagumya, Assistance Commissioner, Sarah B Banage and Manager Public and Corporate Affairs, Ian M Rumanyika.

 

Speaking ahead of the handover, the Ag URA CG, Patrick Mukiibi underscored the regard with which URA holds strategic partnerships in the deliberate effort to promote a culture of compliance to tax.

 

The aspects which rendered The Judiciary peerless among strategic MDA partners during financial year 2017/18 included among others demonstration of absolute impartiality while handling tax related cases, commitment to ensure that tax laws are brought to life, commitment to ensure that The Judiciary’s capacity is built regularly through trainings on tax laws and tax policy changes conducted by Judicial Studies Institute (JSI) in conjunction with URA.

 

Through nine Annual Judges Conferences held in partnership between URA and the Judiciary, the judiciary has been able to advise URA on how to improve revenue collection within the confines of the law. This has had a massive impact on revenue collection efficiency.

 

In his acceptance speech, the Chief Justice , Hon. Justice Bart Katureebe noted that in the Judiciary’s efforts to deliver judicial services to the people of Uganda, Judiciary is prepared to make use of productive partnerships which help the judges to keep up to date with new practices, new laws among many other benefits.

 

He also commended URA’s efforts to mobilize banks to equip courts of law with Point of Sale (POS) Visa Machines to facilitate faster collection of court fines, fees and bail deposits, a move that will further boost revenue collection.

 

“I am proud and privileged to receive the Commissioner General’s Award for the Best Strategic MDA Partner on behalf of the Judiciary, “ said Hon. Justice Bart Katureebe.

 

Present at the handover engagement were Justice G P Wolimbwa, Incharge Judiciary Projects, Ms Esta Nambayo, The Chief Registrar, JTI’s Justice H.P. Adonyo, Permanent Secretary, Mr Kagole Kivumbi, Dr Immaculate Busingye, Inspector of Courts, Vincent E Mugabo, Registrar Mediation, Boniface Wamala, Private Legal Secretary to the CJ and Susan Abinyo, Deputy Registrar.
