Businessman Arrested Over Motorcycles Robberies

Gilbert Ngabo, a businessman in Katwe is in trouble for allegedly selling spare parts of stolen motorcycles.
Ngabo was picked up on Tuesday evening together with five others in an operation led by Ivan Kareiga, the Commander of Katwe Police Station.

The operation stemmed from complainants from various people registered in General Enquiry File (GEF) 05/2019 in which several people accused Ngabo of masterminding motorcycle robberies and dismantling them for spare parts.

Police registered dozens of complaints from people in Katwe, Ndeeba, Natete and other nearby areas.  The Arresting team was comprised of covert police officers and detectives.   Spare parts and number plates of different motorcycles were recovered from Ngabo’s shop.  Some of the recovered number plates include UDJ 810Y, UEN 163Z, UDJ 942M, UEB 898C, UEC 830T, UDX 951E and UDM 866L.

“Some complete motorcycles Registration number UEB 298D, UDH 634I, UER 533X, UDS 570C, UDV 104M, UDJ 234S were also recovered near his shop and were subsequently taken as exhibits,” Kareiga’s said.
Police have since urged people whose motorcycles were stolen to crosscheck the number plates and avail information that would help the ongoing investigations. Ngabo faces charges of robbery. In a similar development, police also arrested, Fauswali Isabirye, a police masquerader who has allegedly been stopping motorcyclists and robbing their motorcycles.

The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, says Isabirye’s arrest came after he was captured on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras stealing a motorcycle in Old Kampala. His picture was put in the monitoring system.

“Fauswali Isabirye has been putting on a police uniform and pretends to be a serving officer, carries out arrests of unsuspecting Bodaboda riders. He has been carrying out thefts with his colleague Moses Tukesiye. Both are residents of Palisa District,” Owoyesigyire said.

Owoyesigyire explained that Isabirye impounds the motorcycles and asks his victims to find him at the nearby police station but varnishes with the motorcycles. Police accuse Isabirye of stealing motorcycles registration numbers UER 349U and UEV 434V from Old Kampala policing division.  He has been slapped with charges of robbery and impersonation.
