DRC people running away to Uganda for safety
The European Union (EU) has contributed Euro1.5Million about (Shs5.802Bn) United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to be used for the registration of refugees running away from the insecurity in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Uganda.
Through their body the European Commission’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, the Union through a press statement announced that the funds will go towards registration of the 60,000 Congolese Refugees in transit and reception areas prior to their relocation to settlement areas in order to access government services.
Uganda is currently home to 1,460,520 refugees mostly from DRC and South Sudan and of these, 129,580 refugees came into Uganda from January to November 2022, and the contribution from EU will go towards complementing the already Euro14.4 Million the body has contributed to the Refugee cause in Uganda between 2021 to 2022.
Mathew Crentsil, UNHCR Representative in Uganda welcomed the contribution, noting that the contribution comes at the time when it has become difficult for UNHCR Uganda operations o maintain emergency support in the growing number of refugees while at the same time providing services to the over 1.4m refugees already in the 13 refugee hosting communities.
The contribution comes at the the United Nations has accused Rwandan Government for supporting rebel group M23 that has committed heinous crimes in DRC with the latest attack that left 131 people dead, further escalating the refugee crisis.
