Strange Disease Killing Goats Reported In Amuru District

Amuru District Veterinary Department has launched investigations into a strange disease that has attacked and killed more than 500 goats in one month.

The affected farmers say that the disease attacks both young and adult goats. The signs include diarrheal discharge, loss of appetite, and droopiness of the animals` ears.

It kills the infected goats within less than five days. It has been reported in Labala Parish, Pabbo Sub County since mid-October this year and has since spread to Amuru Sub County.

John Alfred Labalpiny, the Pabbo Sub County LCIII Chairperson says that at least 271 goats died. They include 86 in Palwong Village, 57 in Parubanga, 45 in Gaya Parish, and, 40 in Kal Parish.

Labalpiny disclosed that he has lost 17 goats that presented with the disease, lost weight, and died within three days. They presented worms in their fecal discharge.

John Orach, a farmer in Andara Village says that his goats also died after developing droopy ears, loss of appetite, and weight, presented with diarrhea, and died after a few days. He added that the meat from the goats is also tasteless even when cooked.

He is now applying a concoction of local herbs to manage the five goats which are battling the same conditions.

Charles Ocitti, the Pabbo Sub County DVO said on Friday that they will launch an investigation into the report through the local authorities but blamed farmers for reporting the disease late.
