Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa (pictured) has warned MPs against going against resolutions of Parliament by participating in the Nyege Nyege festival, noting that lawmakers found to have participated will be in trouble.
“If Nyege Nyege is tomorrow, and the House passed a resolution against Nyege Nyege and I come to know that any of you colleagues attended Nyege Nyege, you will be in trouble,” said Tayebwa.
He issued the warning during the plenary sitting while responding to a complaint raised by Okin Ojara (Chwa West) who wondered why the Executive hasn’t honoured a resolution by Parliament to ban the Nyege Nyege festival.
“The issue of Nyege Nyege has been discussed in this Parliament and there was a parliamentary resolution, but we are seeing various responses from the executive to the effect that this festival must continue. Does the Executive really respect this parliament?” asked Okin.
However, Rukia Nakadama, Third Deputy Prime Minister replied saying a meeting was held between the leadership of Parliament to allow Nyege Nyege festival go on and Police was deployed to ensure observance of law and order at Itanda Falls in Jinja, where the festival is being held.
She explained: “The last time we talked about that issue of Nyege Nyege, there was a consultative meeting that was planned with the executive and parliament and the Speaker accepted to host those people, so I don’t know what was reported here, but because of the negotiations that were agreed upon, I think that was happening now.”
It should be recalled that Parliament recently resolved to ban Nyege Nyege festival citing cases of immorality during the event, but the plans to ban the festival were thwarted by Government that revealed that 8000 people had booked to attend the festival from outside Uganda.
