The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director, Eng. Godfrey Mutabazi has announced that the commission has finalized the move to crackdown all counterfeit electronic devices including phones currently being sold on the Ugandan market.
He said these are being sold at a relatively cheaper price.
He made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing participants from 16 African countries during the 2nd African Group Preparatory meeting for the World Telecommunications Standardization Assemby-20 held in Entebbe.
Mutabazi disclosed that the government of Uganda has also finalized the move to manufacture phones locally and that it has installed technology to detect all fake phones on the market.
He asked the private sector to lead the 4G technology and that the government is committed to supporting them.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance,
Vincent Bagiire, who represented the Guest of Honour, Frank Tumwebaze revealed that the government of Uganda is committed to global agenda of enhancing information to improve peoples’ lives.
He noted that for the last two decades the government has invested heavily in the communications sector as evidenced by the growth Uganda’s communications sector.
