Uganda’s Tax body, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on Saturday arrested a man who had been allegedly posing as a customs officer.
According to Julius Rwangumya, the Acting Commissioner Customs, Caleb Kakiriho (In PIC), a resident of Naalya in Kampala, was netted along Jinja road.
While parading Caleb, Rwangumya revealed that the former was on their radar for a long time due to complaints from traders who claimed he had been fleecing them in the name of URA.
“He was part of a network who would stop trucks with imported goods and extort money from traders. He would go around posing as the Commissioner customs,” Rwangumya said on Tuesday at the URA headquarters.
He added that the likes of Caleb connived with a group of security agents to steal from the public.
The security agents who he did not name allegedly gave Caleb and co protection as they went about carrying out their illegal acts.
He revealed that the tax body is still working on the file case against Caleb and will soon be presented in court to answer for his crimes.
Rwangumya also cautioned the general public especially traders to be on the lookout and stay alert to avoid being fleeced.
He mentioned was in which genuine URA officers can be identified saying they move with the IDs and in specific types of cars (white double cabin vehicles).
Last year, URA arrested more than 10 people posing as URA officers and fleecing the public.
Rwangumya paid tribute to the great work done bu informers who helped in tracking down and finally netting Caleb and his partners in crime.
