URA Engages Stakeholders In West Nile Region To Stamp Out Smuggling, Improve Tax Compliance

URA’s Robert Wamala Lumanyika

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has engaged stakeholders in the West Nile region in its efforts to improve relations and devise better approaches to stamp out smuggling in the entire region.

The dialogue conducted last week at the Heritage courts brought together different stakeholders including security operatives, the business community, taxi drivers and boda boda riders, to resolve a number of issues that include, among others, their safety especially after the killings in South Sudan.

Ivan Kakaire, the Manager Customs Northern Region, told the media that the dialogue also aimed at finding a lasting solution on the issue of smuggling and ultimately improve tax compliance. He also promised to engage the team further and urged them not to cross to South Sudan unless they have security.

The riders and drivers also raised the issue of taxes being too high as well as tainting acts of corruption by some URA staff.

Robert Wamala Lumanyika, the representative of Assistant Commissioner Public and Corporate Affairs promised to organize sector based sensitization that will help bridge the big knowledge gap.

To this offer, the Koboko LCV Chairman elect Mr Mambu offered a free venue for these sessions as soon as they are scheduled.
