Ugandan Police Officer, Civilian Arrested Trying To Sell Gun

A Police officer and a civilian have been arrested in Lira District in possession of an illegal firearm they were  trying to sell.

Emmanuel Onyanga, a PPC no_71630 attached to Bugweri police station and Isaac Ocaka 30-years old,  a peasant of Teduka cell, Aduku Town council in Kwania district were arrested following a tip off by a concerned local.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Police spokesperson confirmed the development saying the suspects are under their custody.

“Yesterday at around 4pm police of North Kyoga got a tip off from concerned citizen that someone wanted to sell a gun at 2m shillings. A follow up was made within Lira City as per the intelligence sent on ground and two suspects were apprehended along Juba road in a room.”

The pump short gun NoUG Pol1040758 with 10 rubber bullets and 3 rounds of ammunition for an AK47 riffle were recovered from the scene.

The duo is charged with unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition under SD ref 67/2/6/2021 and are being held at Lira central police station.

Last month, a security team under the leadership of Lawrence Egole, the Lira City Resident Commissioner arrested a man in possession of an illegal gun which he was hiring out to other criminals for 500,000. The particular gun was recovered from Amugo sub county in Alebtong District after a foiled robbery.

In the last four months, security has recovered a total of 6 guns in Lira district.
