Uganda To Create Authority For Food, Nutrition

A Bill that will culminate into law regulating food consumed in Uganda is in the offing.

This was revealed by Kitagwenda County MP, Abasi  Agaba, who is also the Chairperson Parliamentary Forum on Food Security and Population while meeting Speaker Rebecca Kadaga on Monday.

“As Parliament Forum on Food Security, we intend to bring a Bill that deals with regulation of the quality of food we consume on the market. We have discovered that there is a lot of laxity; we simply rely on our African values that anything we consume from someone is fit to eat, but that isn’t true,” Agaba told the Speaker.

He added: “Recent discovery was the way meat was being preserved around the butchers has shown that there are people who aren’t following the right values. We need an Authority that will be directly responsible for the food and nutrition in Uganda.”

This comes at a time when President Yoweri Museveni wants to close the ‘mushrooming’ government authorities and agencies that aren’t functioning up to the expectations.

  1. The idea about forming Food and Nutrition Security requires everyone’s support.
While food availability has always been emphasised, the issue of nutrition in Uganda require deliberate , strategic and strong focus.

While, as a country, innovatives and value addition has been the in thing. The kind of ingenuity required for this to happen is right nutrition.
