Two More Ivory Smugglers Arrested Fleeing Uganda

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Customs Enforcement Intelligence Officers at Entebbe International Airport last evening intercepted and offloaded two wanted Vietnamese nationals, Nguyen Van Thanh and Dinh Van Chung from Qatar Airways.

The two were part of the 18 wanted mafia racket suspected to be behind the ring of smuggling ivory in the region that URA published recently.

Ivory that was intercepted recently

 URA Customs Enforcement has been on the hunt for the suspects ever since  the three earlier suspects were arrested and prosecuted in court.

 These two were arrested trying to flee the country to escape prosecution.

 URA Customs is now on the hunt for the remaining 16 others at large. This mafia racket are said to have been operating in Uganda for the last 3 years and had a warehouse in Kyebando and a house in Bugolobi.

Other two houses in Kololo were raided and two other women believed to have been part of the prostitution activities were arrested. It’ should be recalled that URA Customs seized the largest ever consignment of ivory and pangolin scales worth over Shs14 billion recently.

Suspects have been stuffing ivory in the timber logs

The warehouse in Kyebando was used as a timber consolidation center where ivory would be stuffed in the timber logs after cutting and creating space. They would then cover the timber space with melted wax in order to confuse the scanner machines.
